United Methodist Women

"The organized unit of United Methodist Women shall be a community of women whose PURPOSE is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ; to develop a creative, supportive fellowship; and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church."
Membership in United Methodist Women is open to all women who seek to be a part of a supportive community committed to the UMW PURPOSE. Members may participate in one of our small group circles or, if unable to participate that way, may be members-at-large. Our circles have varied meeting times that provide opportunities for women with different schedules. There are over a million members of United Methodist Women worldwide. CIRCLES
Within our local unit we have two circles which meet monthly for fellowship, study, devotions, and planning for mission activities. All women of the church are invited to join either group. Childcare may be arranged in advance for any of these meetings with the UMW Childcare Coordinator.
Forget-Me-Nots meet on the third Thursday evening of each month at 7:00 p.m. in the Lawhorn Room. The meetings of this Thursday evening group features a speaker and/or discussion on a topic related to women and children's concerns or on one of the annual UMW study topics. Each year, UMW encourages study in the three areas of spiritual growth, social issues, and geographical area by issuing study books. A business meeting, devotions, and a refreshment and fellowship time follow the program.
Potlatch gathers to share a meal and fellowship one Sunday of the month following the Worship Service. One UMW member caters a luncheon for the members as well as their children in childcare (a small donation is requested to cover the cost of the meal). Following lunch, the group shares in a program or activity which relates to a UMW study area or to being in mission, with a particular focus on projects reaching women and children.
READING PROGRAM
The United Methodist Women prints a flyer each year listing books under the categories of Spiritual Growth, Education for Mission, Nurturing for Community, and Social Action. There are four Reading Plans: Plan 1 requires reading 4 books during the year, one from each category, as well as reading Response Magazine. Plan 2 requires 10 books; Plan 3, 15 books, Plan 4, 20 books. Books must be chosen from the UMW Reading Lists.
MISSIONS and SERVICE
Through our pledges and fund-raising projects, our UMW unit supports the missions of the United Methodist Church that focus on social concerns involving women and children at local, national, and international levels. Through the proceeds of our annual Holiday Lunch and Craft Auction, donations are given to different non-profit organizations. At every Christmas meeting, items needed by non-profit organizations are collected.
Each month our UMW unit arranges for church member volunteers to provide dishes for a meal for the residents of Clare House, a shelter for homeless women and children.
